Nature After Nature: DRAWING TREES WITH SCENT Preparing For The Future: Forest Bathing Without Trees (Olfactory performance) MUELLER-DIVJAK (Jeanette Müller & Paul Divjak) with Lucie Strecker Music by b.fleischmann A performative funeral procession for collective olfactory memories Studies have shown that the forest atmosphere has a significant physiological effect on humans, which is reflected among other things in the trend towards so-called "forest bathing" (Shinrin Yoku). Scientists assume that these effects are achieved by breathing in various phytochemicals produced by trees. With the olfactory performance DRAWING TREES WITH SCENT the artist and researcher duo MUELLER- DIVJAK (Jeanette Müller & Paul Divjak), who is currently running their FWF/PEEK funded arts-based research project “Sensing Living Systems” together with Alexandra Graupner at AIL, is staging a temporary experimental olfactory arrangement, such creating ephemere evidences: visitors are invited to take their time, follow their noses and let the effects of a selected composition take effect on them. The composition of an exclusive forest bouquet determines the olfactory perception. Delicate notes of tree species threatened by extinction through commercial overharvesting, uncontrolled deforestation, excessive habitat destruction and human-made changes in climatic conditions are filling the air.
